This 1979 Subaru Brat (VIN A69L509689) is an incomplete but running project with a tuned, 80′s era EA82T turbo boxer and 5-speed manual swapped in. The car/truck sounds to need quite a bit of sorting, and though the color, body mods and other details aren’t exactly our cup of tea, we think it’s a fantastic concept in need of some better execution. Find it here on eBay in Salisbury, North Carolina with no reserve and sub-$1k bidding.
Turbo Project: 1979 Subaru Brat
Rare in the USA: 1970 Peugeot 204 Cabriolet Project
This 1970 Peugeot 204 cabriolet (chassis 6419653) is somewhat of a rarity in the US, and though largely complete, the car will need rust repair prior to being drivable again. Purchased by the seller from Canada, they claim to have driven it for a number of years with little trouble before corrosion set in, and though floor pans are quite crusty the rest of the car seems relatively solid. It’s a great looking little convertible, and provided rust is as limited as pictures suggest we think it’d make a great restoration project. Find it here on eBay in Pensacola, Florida with no reserve and sub-$2k bidding.
Though jambs and underhood paint might suggest that green is the car’s original color, overspray on the chassis tag raises the possibility of a previous, full respray. The seller mentions body filler and several dents, but trim and glass seem to be intact and restorable for the most part. A new top will be needed, and we’d try to source new panels where necessary. Parts supply in France is still pretty good from what we gather, and it would be beneficial to have a European contact.
Seats, dash top, switchgear, instruments and driver’s side door card range from serviceable to surprisingly well-preserved, though the latter will ideally be refurbished or replaced—the opposite side is missing. Column-shift manuals are always fun, and pedal covers with minimal wear suggest the odometer recorded 63k and change miles may be accurate. The top will need replacing, but its folding frame looks good to go.
Last run two years ago, the seller believes it would probably start again with little provocation, but makes no guarantees. A transversely mounted, aluminum 1127 cc four of roughly 60 HP, Peugeot engineered 204′s to carry their transaxle/differential units directly beneath the sump, explaining why their motors always seem to be mounted a few inches too high. Floor pan rust is mostly confined to the corners where the unibody mounts to the front subframe, a common problem according to the seller.
The listing suggests it would make a good parts car, but we’d prefer to see it live again. It’d excel as a stylish, distinctive beach town cruiser, but the new owner/restorer would be well-advised to not skimp on the rust protection and keep it indoors.
No Reserve Split Window: 19K Mile 1963 Chevrolet Corvette
This 1963 Corvette (chassis 30837S104985) shows a claimed-accurate 18k and change on its odometer and was recently pulled from 20 years of storage. A lower spec 327/250 HP, Powerglide equipped model, the car received a factory-color respray and had its matching-numbers motor rebuilt sometime prior to its extended nap. The seller mentions very minor surface rust, but under-body photos appear to show a very clean, solid car, and though currently running they add it will need some tuning to be fully drivable. Find it here on eBay in Las Vegas, Nevada with no reserve.
Daytona Blue is the correct color for this car, and though respray quality looks to have been decent, all those years in storage have left it peeling and and slightly flat in places. OEM hubcaps remain along with all other factory trim and brightwork, and fiberglass bodywork seems to be in very nice condition throughout with no evidence of cracking or hazing. New paint, gaskets, a headlight realignment and some chrome polish are all it appears to need.
Things look pretty good inside as well, and though tired carpets will probably need replacement, seats, door cards, dash, instruments and switchgear all seem to have survived the past half century with relatively few signs of aging. The steering wheel will need a new rim and horn button, a lower dash/center console union trim piece is missing and the headliner looks a bit rough, but provided electrics are in good working order the cabin should need only general tidying.
Claimed to have accumulated only 500 miles since being rebuilt, the clean looking 327 runs but will need tuning—likely only plugs, wires, fuel filter, cleaned tank, and so on, though a carb rebuild may be in order as well. It’s also said to drive well, but we’d go through brakes and suspension prior to putting on any serious miles. A/C was added during the engine rebuild, and will most likely also need servicing.
Though we question why such a low mile car would have required a new motor, the respray can likely be explained by intense desert sun. Neglect doesn’t appear to be an issue, and the matching-numbers drivetrain is a definite plus. We wish it were a 340 horse/4-speed, but welcome the fact the car’s entry-level spec will keep prices somewhat realistic—keeping in mind that bidding started at $100!
Sub $300 1969 Lancia Flavia 2000 Berlina Project
This 1969 Flavia 2000 Berlina (chassis 8196105001082) is heavily rusted but largely complete, and the long-time owner says the engine was recently persuaded to turn following treatment with some penetrating oil. Restoring this one will be a mighty undertaking, but being an old Lancia we hope it sees the road again or is at least used for parts in order to resurrect another. Find it here on eBay in Tulsa, Oklahoma with no reserve and one, $242 bid as the auction approaches closing.
1972 Fiat Dino 2.4
This 1972 Fiat Dino 2.4 Coupe (VIN 135BC0005609) is said to run and drive very nicely following a recent $8k service that included refurbished heads for its Ferrari-designed V6. Some minor, treatable sounding rust is mentioned, and provided the car is as solid as claimed it would appear to be a good example to take to a higher level. Find it here on eBay in Gaylordsville, Connecticut with reserve not met.
1971 Alfa Romeo GTAm Replica
This 1971 Alfa Romeo GTV (VIN AR1532910) has been built into a replica of the famed GTAm lightweight racers. The car could be finished better, as there are some serious waves in the fiberglass, but this could potentially make a decent vintage racer with some safety improvements. The interior is a bit of a puzzle, with very nice stock seats in an otherwise-bare compartment–the wooden armrest is a bit odd, as well. Find it here on eBay in New Egypt, New Jersey with reserve not met.
1971 Peugeot 304
This 1971 Peugeot 304 is described as a complete and rust-free US model but is sold with a bill of sale only. The car looks solid and straight, but seems to have undergone a poor quality color change at some point. Said to start, run and drive, the interior shows pretty well and the seller has additional parts. Find it here on Craigslist in Mission Hills, California for $5,000.
1962 GMC Suburban Airporter Project
This 1962 GMC Suburban Airporter is a stretched six door model converted by Stageway Coaches. These trucks were built in a variety of lengths, this actually being one of the shorter we’ve seen. Said to need restoration, it looks complete but rusty, and the seller has spare parts, though it’s not said if they’re included for the price. Find it here on Craigslist in Bend, Oregon for $7,500.
$800 Project: 1966 Datsun 320 Pick-Up
This 1966 Datsun 320 pick-up is a non-running project, but is described as largely complete and mostly solid. Parts availability may be a problem, but these trucks are so simple in construction and engineering that refurbishing what is on hand should be relatively straightforward. Last registered in the early 80′s, it would have been a rare site on the roads even then. Find it here on Craigslist in Sylmar, California for $799.
1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT project
This 1976 Alfetta GT project is said to have last been registered in 1986 and to have run two years ago, having sat under a cover since. The seller mentions some rust, but the car appears complete–if more than a bit sun-toasted. These coupes used a RWD transaxle layout for excellent weight distribution, an arrangement which evolved into the Milano and GTV6 series. Find it here on Craigslist in Ventura, California for $1,750.
S2000 Powered: 1962 Sunbeam Alpine Project
This 1962 Alpine is on offer by a speed shop owner who has done some impressive sounding work including full body prep. Starting from a rust-free car, it’s now said to be very straight and ready for final blocking and paint. A 50k mile Honda S2000 engine and trans are included, complete with A/C, radiator, cat, air box, clutch slave and more. This sounds like a killer project to us, and we love the idea of terrorizing Tigers. Find it here on Craigslist in Vancouver, Washington for $9,500.
See Where They Rust: $3495 1993 Mercedes Benz 500E
This 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E is a 266k-mile car offered for dirt cheap, and the seller freely admits that it has lots of rust. He includes some reasonably good exterior photos that show many of the perforated areas, and we’ll check all of these on any 500Es we consider in the future. The driver door bubbling is more severe than on all other doors, so we have to wonder if there was an accident or respray in that area. The iconic 500E front fender flares also show serious bubbling and decay. Find it here on Craigslist in Stoughton, Massachusetts for $3495. Special thanks to BaT reader Bill H. for this submission!
The trunk lid shows interesting bubbling at the corners above the trim strip. We’ve never seen W124s with rust bubbles here, but honestly we haven’t seen many with cancer this severe. Staining is evident below the tail lights, so it would be interesting to inspect the trunk channels with the lid open.
The left rear fender shows bubbling along much of the bumper edge seam. This could be from road salt camping out above the bumper, or from moisture inside the trunk.
The roof panel shows rust between the sunroof panel and the driver door top. It is difficult to discern whether it is also over on the passenger side.
We want one of these cars pretty badly but are usually scared off by fears of mechanical repair costs. Never before have we considered body integrity as an issue. This car has opened our eyes, and now we will inspect other candidates much differently.
1967 Sunbeam Tiger & Alpine Project Combo Deal
This 2-car 1967 Sunbeam project package shows a V8 car with a hardtop that is claimed to be a real Tiger. The red car is an Alpine and many spares are said to be included at the price. Find it listed less than a day ago here on Craigslist outside Knoxville, Tennessee for $18k. Special thanks to BaT reader Miles S. for this submission!
Nearly Complete: Partially Restored 1952 Tatra T600 Tatraplan
This 1952 Tatra T600 Tatraplan is being offered as a partially restored project, the seller noting that it still needs seats, upholstery, wiring, windows and some bent fenders mended. Before pictures appear to show a mostly solid and complete donor car, and much of the heavy lifting—engine, gearbox, brakes and paint—have already been completed. Though not quite as cool as the company’s V8-powered streamliners, these smaller four cylinder cars share similar characteristics including elevated build quality and engineering. Find this one here on Hemmings in Niles, Michigan for $20k OBO.
As seen below, the car appears to have been sourced somewhere in the desert, and based on what looked to be solid rockers and lower extremities we’d guess that’s where it had lived for many years before relocating to the Midwest. Original color isn’t specified, but this cream teal is a good, period-correct match and suits the car well. Door handles, badges and other trim appear to be at least partially complete, and there is a large support network for restored, reproduction and NOS parts inside of their native Czech Republic
Following the seller’s included, external photo link, we can see what appear to be both front and rear bench seats, including top and bottom portions. Reupholstering these will be a simple job, and much preferable to fabricating new frames from scratch. The bare interior and subfloor help to demonstrate the time-intensive, largely hand-made nature of these cars, and though an original looking banjo steering wheel is in place we’d want to know if gauges and switchgear are included as well.
Many Tatraplans have been converted to VW engines, but it’s nice to see that this example retains its correct, Tatra-designed air-cooled flat four. We’ve seen at least one T600 with an air-cooled Tatra V8 swapped into the back, and as long as no permanent structure modifications were necessary it’d make an interesting upgrade here as well. Windows will likely be available through Czech outlets, though the new owner should not expect them to be cheap.
The photo above shows the car’s motor before restoration. One of the greatest orphan makes in auto history, we’d love to count a Tatra among our collection someday, and we’re fully behind this one being finished and put back into service soon.
1965 Falcon Futura Coupe
This 1965 Falcon Futura is said to be a manual transmission car that wears both original California black plates. The exterior looks mostly complete, but it is hard to tell whether it has an engine installed, and if so, whether it is a V8. Find it here on Craigslist in Auburn, California for $1500.
Rust Free 1970 Triumph GT6+ Project
This 1970 Triumph GT6+ has been prepped for paint in white primer following what’s described as minor bodywork, and is further claimed to be free of rust following floor replacement by a previous owner. Though the engine will fire occasionally the seller says it will need timing work to run well, while the transmission shifts smoothly but will require overdrive solenoid work. Find it here on eBay in Virginia Beach, Virginia with no reserve.
Rough But Restorable: 1959 MGA Twin Cam Project
This 1959 MGA Twin Cam (chassis YD3-2298) is sold as a partially disassembled, rough, but largely complete and solid restoration project. Retaining its original motor and gearbox, the car sounds to have been taken off the road many years ago following a hit near the driver’s side door, and though door posts and frame are both damaged, replacement body structure parts are included and the frame appears to be repairable. Find it here on eBay in Salem, Virginia for $26,500 OBO.
Fitted with a low-profile racing screen from the factory, the original has gone missing but a repro replacement is included. Originally Iris Blue, the light exterior would have been contrasted with navy side curtains, tonneau and top, all of which are replicated with new, claimed top-quality replacement items. Rockers have seen better days and bodywork is crusty with old paint, but underneath a healthy layer of surface corrosion the car appears largely solid—though floors do seem to be missing.
A new Moss grille, original fenders, hood and trunk lids, bumpers, doors and locks are all included, but trim like lights, bezels, and various pieces of brightwork aren’t mentioned. The dash looks complete with gauges, alloy sports steering wheel and switchgear, and new, unfitted black leather seat covers and armrest with light blue piping are included along with replacement door cards.
The included motor and gearbox are claimed to be original, and though both look complete, their internal condition is said to be unknown. Seeing as it’s pretty easy to attempt to turn a motor by hand it’d be best to expect a full rebuild before bidding, but even if it did turn out to be free, extensive internal work would still likely be warranted before re-installation.
New, Twin Cam-specific front coil springs are included, as are five OEM style, presumably original Dunlop wheels. The above chassis shot shows plenty of surface rust, but looks largely salvageable with some work.
A big project to be sure, its rareness and relative completeness will nonetheless ensure an eventual, likely high-quality restoration. Though it goes without saying, we hope it gets driven properly—nothing says an investment car can’t be enjoyed.
1967 Fiat Dino Coupe
This 1967 Dino coupe (VIN 135AC0000095) is said to be rust-free save for a dime-sized spot of surface bubbling. Good, driver-level cosmetics could be taken to a higher level, while the serviceable interior houses a few inop gauges as well as a cracked dash. It’s not known if the motor is original, and the seller adds: “The car can be idiosyncratic at times, but presently runs, sounds and handles really well. The driving experience is thrilling.” Find it here on eBay in Burlingame, California with reserve not met.
See Where They Rust: 1972 Porsche 911T
This 1972 911T (chassis 9112101304) is offered as a project with engine and trans absent and rust throughout. Large holes are found all over on the car’s body and the rear package tray is completely gone, which as the seller points out is odd, as the floors and firewall are mostly intact despite obviously heavy exposure to moisture in the jambs and interior. With half it’s weight likely turned to red oxide dust, this one’s almost certainly destined for parts duty, as getting it back on the road would take a near miraculous restoration effort . Find it here on eBay in Ono, Pennsylvania with an $8,700 BIN.
Rockers on both sides of the car show very heavy corrosion, and as seen from the driver’s side view, rot begins where the door scuff panel ends–water is likely to have pooled here for many years. Also seen from this side are three large holes in the floor around the driver’s seat, and both sides show perforation in the rear wheel wells. More than just a weld-in panel replacement job, any potential restoration will require some serious fabrication skills and no small amount of raw material and patience.
Arguably the most notable damage is near the package tray under the rear windshield, which appears to have rusted away from the middle outward. A leaky rear window seal is the likely culprit. Fortunately, it seems that the engine bay/transmission tunnel is largely free of rust, save for some relatively small places.
Although seemingly impossible, this same affected area looks much worse from the interior view. Note the heavy surface rust on the area behind the seats, and the mold on the driver’s seat. We’re beginning to wonder if this 911 was underwater at some point.
Unsurprisingly, pan and kick panels are also in bad shape, and in addition to the rot seen in rockers we’re surprised the floors aren’t completely gone. More mold is seen on the dash pad, door cards, and steering wheel–better stock up on respirators and Nitrile gloves.
Despite heavy rust on the outside fenders and sill, the luggage compartment’s interior is surprisingly intact, though the latch and surrounding area have been completely eaten away, as has the valance below where moisture seems to have collected. Headlight buckets are heavily rusted along with the trim around the turn signals.
The underside view shows worse damage with corrosion on the edge of the trunk pan, and surface rust on the bottom of the fuel tank–rust can even be seen poking through the front valance’s primer. From this view, the small hole in the driver’s floor appears to be getting larger.
Beyond glass and a few other trim pieces, even the car’s viability as a parts donor may be in question. Nearly nine grand is a lot to ask for a collection of mostly disintegrated steel pressings, castings and extrusions, but we still can’t help but smile at the thought of at least part of the old wreck helping to give life to another needy car.
Three for One: 1986 Lada Niva Troika
This lot of three 1986 Nivas are all said to run, with one claimed to have had $4k worth of parts recently installed. Unlike many Eastern Bloc vehicles, Nivas were surprisingly decent–if crude–little cars, capable of keeping up with more traditional 4X4′s in rough terrain. Though sold in Canada until 1998, these are now legal under the DOT 25 year exemption, and though we’re not sure what we’d do with a troika of Nivas, keeping one at the country dacha and running another at LeMons might be fun. Find them here on Kijiji in Redwater, Alberta, Canada for $8,000.
